Once I have a new idea, I have to dive in right away. I sketch out the box and plan all the measurements, the way the box opens, and any sanding detail or embellishments. Then I build the foundation: the basic box. Four sides, a top, and a bottom. I’ve been experimenting with different wood combinations to see how the colors and finishes go together. I also do a lot of research into different ways to do joinery, and I love trying out new techniques.
After the construction of the box is complete, I get to move onto my favorite part! I draw out where I plan to carve right on the box, then take a seat at my work bench and get to it! I could spend hours just carving and sanding. Once I’m happy with the flow and shape of the details, I do a final pass with a very fine sandpaper. Then the last step is to apply the finish to bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
